Smoke-free London, 1 July 2007
June 7th, 2007 | by gordon |
On March 23rd, a regulation was laid before the Parliament with the reason to make London smoke free. The Regulation will come into force at July 1 2007. There is even a smoke free sign regulation! The NHS reports about a survey of 1,084 businesses in England and 1,726 members of the public showed that 74 percent of the overall population support the legislation with results as below:
* 65 percent of the population say that the legislation will not affect how often they go to the pub
* 15 percent say they will go the pub more often
* 75 percent believe that going smoke-free will have a positive effect on health.
Countries such a Bhutan, Cuba, Ireland, Italy, New Zealand and Malta have done so and now, England on the list. Various communities are supporting this and guides after guides have been coming in all over on how to stop smoking, how to react about it, etc. You will be fined £50 for smoking in no smoking premises. Otherways, you will be fined £200 for failing to display a non-smoking sign and an ultimate amount of £2500 on failing to prevent smoking in a smoke-free place.
Seems like the government is playing its part in contributing to the health for the society. I’m happy for that and I certainly do want to do a comparison with our local ‘Tak Nak‘ Campaign. It’s not that the after-effects of smoking should be shown to battle the initiatives of smoking or maybe Franklin Gothic or Gill Sans doesn’t serve well as a large display type or something fishy is going on there. The results of the campaign can be summed up here. I certainly do support anti-smoking campaigns. Just a little confused on how to react towards it sometimes, as a non-smoker trying to support the campaign.
People know the dangers of smoking. People know lung cancer has no cure. Asking my friend who smokes about why he does so, he answered me this:
“Just addicted to it. Started a long time ago.”
