This just came out of the studio. A community website started to share excuses with one another, learn about human behaviour and encourage one another to make time for important things in life. We are so busy that we have no time, no time for almost everything. So, hop along and register as a user, get a free blog space to rant! Talking about social responsibilities of a designer (!) It also catered for a student 2008 calender design competition organized by Antalis. Will keep it updated from time to time. Any questions? Email me at fongfeikei@notimenotime.com.

Jiad Li did the rabbit. I’m wondering whose eyes she used for the rabbit..

The big screen

June 22nd, 2007

May to July are all respectively movie months. Attractions such as Spiderman 3, Pirates of the Carribean 3, Transformers, Shrek 3, Die Hard 4, Oceans 13, The Simpson movie, etc.. The list goes on and I going practically crazy because I want to watch them all(!) Do not forget Resident Evil 3 which might be out in September too!

I had a good start for the movie months marathon; Spiderman 3 was a very emotional movie. So emotional that the girl a few seats away wept tearfully when Harry Osborn died. Yes, he died, but as a goodie. Yes, he teamed up with Spidey. A story like movie such as this one never fails to entertain both adults and kids alike. If you’ve been working too hard lately, get off your seat and get a seat at the big screen.

Of all the movies, there is however on specific movie that I’ve been waiting for the past year. One that not many people know of. A movie that is celebrated widely across India. Streets were filled with celebrations when such movies were released. The name of the movie is:

SIVAJI: THE BOSS

Yes. Starring India’s superstar, Rajinikanth. Now, I have deep respect for this man. Not only for his charisma in the movies but for his heart for the poor. He signed a contract that after his death, a fairly huge amount of his possessions will go to the poor living in the streets of India. If there were to be another anticipated actor in Asia other than Jacky Chan, it would be him. Among South India, both he and Kamal Hassan stand side by side, making it big time in the world of movies.

Most of his movies are all high budgets. Over the years, he has created various signature moves such as turning his shades rhythmically in style while putting them on, tossing a cigarette straight into his mouth from a certain distance, etc. Also, a won fairly decent amount of fans all around the world.

Back in year 2005, when his movie then, Chandramukhi was released, I went to the cinema and watch it with a friend. it was indeed a very different experience from watching a typical Hollywood-styled happy ending. This was different.

Yes, it was a happy ending but the state of mind that I’m in while watching the movie is one that I rather enjoy in the show. If you were to be absolutely critical in watching this movie, you will be bored; in fact not only this movie but every movie. Why not just sit back, enjoy what other people have such high hopes and anticipated for. Why not just put aside all self-indulgence while trying to enjoy a movie?

I really dislike it when people put themselves ahead of the argument about whether a movie is likable or not. I heard so many comment, both nice and not-so-nice, fair and totally bias, etc. I’m actually very tired of hearing that.

Which brings me to a separate point, making a movie is obviously not easy.

Disappointments will come if one tries to find merely what one expects or wants to see in a movie. It’s not your work and not your show. I rather avoid shows that I feel I won’t be able to enjoy even if it’s a well-spoken-of-hit.

Same principal can be applied in book-reading and in selecting music. Up to today, I still wonder how on earth a salesman friend of mine back then highly criticize Bob Dylan for his songs. Which always reminds me of his song “The times they are a-changing.”

In M.Night Shyamalan’s excellent movie, Lady in the Water, I was satisfied that he took the character of the movie critic to the grave. He killed him. In significance of the characters portrayed, the critic is actually the one who misleads everyone else. Forming pre-recorded ideas about certain movies even before watching. Being predictable while watching and expect linear expectations while viewing.

*If you want to join me in any of the movies above, except the B-grade’s please, give me a ring. I have 6 takers for SIVAJI already, and it’s tomorrow.

SIVAJI:THE BOSS:YOUR BOSS:SO KEEP QUIET AND WATCH THE SHOW

Oggy and the Cockroaches

June 17th, 2007

I love this cartoon series. I remember waking up early on Saturdays to catch em’ on TV. As much as I love Spongebob Squarepants, Joey, Dee Dee and Marky were my favourites back then. If you haven’t watched the cartoon series and want a good laugh, the list for a couple of series are here on youtube. Check out their website which kept me entertained for a while. A word of caution, may be  disturbing to some!oggychase.jpg

4As Council Report

June 15th, 2007

A lot of people mistaken me for an artist. But frankly, a big part of my job is basically making things more assessable to people*.

Below is an example of a 32 page council report we did sometime ago, in the month of March if i remember it correctly. I thought that it would be interesting to show this. Up to date, this is one of the wicked fun projects to do. All that rushing and anxiousness.

Type set in FF Page Serif and Sans, printed in four colors on Sappi Reviva White. Cliches interpreted vibrantly via quirky drawings. Blasted them so that they are loud enough to scream out about the nature of what and how the client does. The Association of Accredited Advertising Agents Malaysia.

*At the same time, make people happy and try to be happy making them happy.

Smoke-free London, 1 July 2007

June 7th, 2007

picture-2.jpg

On March 23rd, a regulation was laid before the Parliament with the reason to make London smoke free. The Regulation will come into force at July 1 2007. There is even a smoke free sign regulation! The NHS reports about a survey of 1,084 businesses in England and 1,726 members of the public showed that 74 percent of the overall population support the legislation with results as below:

* 65 percent of the population say that the legislation will not affect how often they go to the pub
* 15 percent say they will go the pub more often
* 75 percent believe that going smoke-free will have a positive effect on health.

Countries such a Bhutan, Cuba, Ireland, Italy, New Zealand and Malta have done so and now, England on the list. Various communities are supporting this and guides after guides have been coming in all over on how to stop smoking, how to react about it, etc. You will be fined £50 for smoking in no smoking premises. Otherways, you will be fined £200 for failing to display a non-smoking sign and an ultimate amount of £2500 on failing to prevent smoking in a smoke-free place.

Seems like the government is playing its part in contributing to the health for the society. I’m happy for that and I certainly do want to do a comparison with our local ‘Tak Nak‘ Campaign. It’s not that the after-effects of smoking should be shown to battle the initiatives of smoking or maybe Franklin Gothic or Gill Sans doesn’t serve well as a large display type or something fishy is going on there. The results of the campaign can be summed up here. I certainly do support anti-smoking campaigns. Just a little confused on how to react towards it sometimes, as a non-smoker trying to support the campaign.

People know the dangers of smoking. People know lung cancer has no cure. Asking my friend who smokes about why he does so, he answered me this:

“Just addicted to it. Started a long time ago.”

Olympics 2012

June 4th, 2007

Yesterday, the logo for the 2012 Olympic Games was revealed to the public. Forgive me but I’m having problems trying to appreciate it. A few quotes taken from BBC sports website:

“This is the vision at the very heart of our brand,” said London 2012 organising committee chairman Seb Coe.

“It’s not a logo, it’s a brand that will take us forward for the next five years,” he told BBC Five Live.

International Olympic Committee President Jacques Rogge said: “This is a truly innovative brand logo that graphically captures the essence of the London 2012 Olympic Games – namely to inspire young people around the world through sport and the Olympic values.

(From creative match) The brief reads:

“An emblem that represented the four key ‘brand pillars’ of access, participation, stimulation and inspiration, culminating in the brand vision of ‘Everyone’s Games’.”

I’m really having an internal struggle to appreciate this. I’m sorry, I’m not being sarcastic. This identity is done by Wolff Ollins and I have a vast amount of respect to any work that he has done and will do. A little research suggests that the organisers are targeting at young people to get involved. Joining what? The games itself? Everyone’s games? You can watch the brand video here.

But again, building an identity sorely upon the foundations of the logo is not the case in the big picture. The Olympics have been around and the world turns its eyes at it. I’m sure that the whole promotional and marketing team for the games, has have a set of expected influences on the decision of making the games a success. It would be sad if the logo alone has to to the job right? Arguments and comments have been pouring in worldwide about this one. But will they stand the test of time? Or will the brand prove them all wrong? Otl Aicher’s pictogram designs for the 1972 Munich Olympics impressed us until today. Style will evolve and change. Maybe, this architecture will be the next ‘logo-trend’ for the coming years. A little showcase of Olympic logo’s are available here on Wiki. Also, some logo’s that could have been chosen here.

You can sign a petition against it if you want…

The numbers 2012 broken down to form the logo well, in my personal opinion, looks like the swastika, distorted. But I like that fact. Yeah, it actually happens to be pretty dynamic as well. At a certain angle, it looks like some dude doing a “snake head hand signal” with his right leg up facing left.

I would consider this identity and logo a huge success if I’m motivated to do some exercises with it’s influence around. I don’t care if it’s ugly or not. I am going to learn and observe from the development of this identity until 2012. That’s what I want to get out of this case study.

Shocked, yes. Excited, I don’t know. Impressed, maybe in the future (Do not judge a book by its cover, at least until you have finish reading it). Curious, absolutely!

On the ligher note, why some greek influences on the choice of typeface? I thought Mr Eric Gill will rule the world this time..
